Today is the day that you not only pay your taxes, but also the day you get to choose who will spend them.
Yes, that’s right, in an interesting twist, election day and the tax filing deadline in Canada have both fallen on the same day. And just like any rare celestial event, who knows if this’ll ever happen again in our lifetimes? I don’t know the answer, nor do I know if this has ever happened before, but it nonetheless makes for an interesting situation.
Add to all of this what seems to be a dramatic shift in the political landscape (the latest polls have the NDP surpassing the Liberals in voter intention), and what everyone assumed would be a lame and useless election may turn out to be quite the game changer.
What does all this mean?
For those out there who don’t vote, nothing really. Whoever ends up in charge tomorrow will spend your money just as the last ones in charge did, and you’ll just keeping paying as you’ve always done.
If you are voting today, however, well you have a say in who will spend your money, and what they will spend it on. Funny thing is, it doesn’t take much to have your say, you just need to go somewhere and put an X on a piece of paper.
So take a few minutes out of your day today and go vote, because otherwise your just giving out a blank check to whoever ends up winning this race.
